Mufti Launches Annual Muslim Scholars’ Conference

His Eminence Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, inaugurated the first annual gathering of Ugandan Muslim Scholars, organized by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), on Tuesday, November 7th, 2023. The conference is scheduled to conclude later today.
In his opening remarks, Sheikh Mubaje highlighted the background of the conference, drawing inspiration from numerous International Symposiums and Conferences he has attended in various Muslim nations. He explained that the conference’s primary objective is to promote unity and mutual respect among Ugandan Muslim Scholars, even if they hold differing opinions on theological matters.
Sheikh Mubaje emphasized that such gatherings aim to equip Muslim preachers with effective communication skills for spreading the Islamic message to people of all religious backgrounds. He expressed concerns about the rise of ill-informed and unqualified preachers on social media platforms who often spread contradictory and controversial Islamic religious views, causing confusion and using inappropriate language.
The Mufti extended his gratitude to Muslim preachers on the right path for their noble contributions to the spiritual growth of Muslim believers. He also thanked Mr. Noorul-Huda Al-Ajab Abdallah Muhammad, the Country Director of Direct Aid Society, an international charity, for their logistical support to the conference. Dr. Edris Othuman, Secretary for Education at Direct Aid Society’s Uganda office, is among the facilitators of the event.
Hon. Hadji Abbas Sekyanzi Muluubya, the newly appointed UMSC Secretary General, commended the Mufti for the initiative to gather Muslim Scholars, describing it as an opportunity to enhance their communication skills and knowledge in promoting Islam in their communities. The conference will feature discussions on various topics, including DNA testing, virtual marriages conducted via social media, surrogate motherhood, and the significance of commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, emerging situations such as the outbreak of covid 19 pandemic.
The event is attended by His Eminence Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, the 2nd Deputy Mufti, Hon. Counsel Haj Muhammad Ali Aluma, the UMSC Deputy Secretary General in charge of Finance, Sheikh Imran Ssali, Secretary for Religious Affairs, Dr. Sheikh Ziad Swaleh Lubanga, Director of Sharia, Regional Assistants to the Mufti, prominent Sheikhs, and heads of Islamic theological institutions, among others.
