Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has solidified a memorandum of understanding with Direct Aid Society, an international Muslim charity headquartered in Kuwait. The agreement, officially signed by Hon. Counsel Haj Muhammad Ali Aluma, the UMSC Secretary General, and Mr. Nourelhuda Elaagab Abdallah Mohammed, the Country Director of Direct Aid Society, aims to promote divine values outlined in Quranic verses, particularly emphasizing the significance of freeing those in bondage and providing assistance to those in debt.
The signing ceremony took place at the headquarters of Direct Aid Society in Najjanankumbi, on the outskirts of Kampala Capital City, on August 8th, 2023. The collaborative effort seeks to address the issue of prison congestion, a predicament often exacerbated by minor offenses leading to imprisonment, such as failure to settle debts.
Hon. Muhammad Ali Aluma highlighted that the program aims to work alongside government authorities to facilitate the decongestion of jails, ensuring that inmates receive necessary support within the confines of legal court procedures. He further emphasized that the agreement will also focus on fostering reconciliation between victims and perpetrators, as well as providing guidance and counseling to ex-prisoners to aid in their reintegration into society.
Dr. Sheikh Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga, the Director of Sharia at UMSC, and Dr. Idris Mohamed, in charge of Education programs at Direct Aid, were present to witness the signing, underscoring the significance of the partnership.
