UMSC announces plans to establish Abattoirs

Hon.Muhammad Ali Aluma, the Secretary General of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), has announced plans to establish abattoirs across the country. The aim is to generate employment opportunities for youth and expand UMSC’s financial base. During a one-day orientation meeting organized by the Halal UMSC Directorate at Headquarters, held on June 13th, 2023, Hon. Aluma emphasized the importance of developing workable strategies to harness the income potential of halal activities.

“Your meeting is timely and indeed you ought to hold many of them and come up with workable strategies that will enable you tap in this vast income generating halal activities. This alone can sustain the entire UMSC basing on the big number of animals and birds that are slaughtered for public consumption daily,” Hon. Aluma remarked.

He pledged his full support to the officers responsible for animal slaughter, as the future establishment of abattoirs remains a key focus for UMSC. Furthermore, Hon. Aluma urged the participants to adhere to the UMSC Financial Policy, which governs revenue collection from their activities, emphasizing the need for financial transparency and accountability.

Sheikh Abdul-Karim Katamba, the UMSC  Director of Halal, encouraged the participants to fulfill their defined roles and consult with his office for guidance in their daily duties. The orientation session, led by Sulaiman Sserunkuuma, National Halal Field Supervisor, covered various topics essential to the participants’ roles.

These included establishing close networks with government authorities such as the Ministries of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, Health, Local Government, Internal Affairs, Police, and Veterinary Officers, among others. Efficient communication with the public, market supervision of halal practices, promotion of hygiene in slaughterhouses, enforcement of proper transportation and handling of animals, and the importance of rejecting bribes were also emphasized.

Notable attendees at the event included Sheikh Jamiru Ntambi, the Kadhi of Lubaga Muslim District, and his Makindye counterpart, Sheikh Ahmad Hood Galiwango among others.
