Zakat Nisab for 2026 (1448 AH)
The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), through its Department of Zakat and Swadaqa, has officially announced the current Zakat Nisab for 2026 (1448 AH). The announcement is intended to guide Muslims across Uganda in fulfilling one of the fundamental pillars of Islam based on the prevailing market values of gold and silver.
According to the announcement, the Gold Nisab, equivalent to 85 grams of gold, is valued at UGX 40,536,500, while the Silver Nisab, equivalent to 595 grams of silver, is valued at UGX 2,391,900. Consequently, the Council has set the official Zakat Nisab at UGX 2,400,000.
This means that any Muslim whose qualifying wealth—including cash, savings, business goods, or trade assets—equals or exceeds UGX 2,400,000 and has remained above this amount for one lunar year (Hawl) is obligated to pay Zakat at the rate of 2.5%.
The Head of the UMSC Department of Zakat and Swadaqa, Sheikh Kaloozi Abdulbarri Muhammad, called upon Muslims to fulfil this sacred obligation diligently, emphasizing that Zakat is not merely a financial duty but an act of worship that purifies wealth, supports vulnerable members of society, and strengthens unity within the Muslim community.
