The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Education Secretary, Sheikh Juma Bakhit Cucu, on Monday, August 3, 2026, conducted an inspection tour of UMSC-founded and Muslim-founded educational institutions in Kalungu Local Govt District under Masaka Muslim District, West Buganda Muslim Region.
Sheikh Cucu began the exercise with an unannounced visit to Bajja Community Primary School, where he was received by the Headteacher, Mr. Kayinga Isma. He toured the school facilities before holding a meeting with the headteacher.
During the meeting, Sheikh Cucu learned that the school is a privately owned Muslim-founded institution. He commended its founders for establishing a centre of learning that is nurturing the next generation and praised them for investing in quality infrastructure that provides a conducive learning environment.
He, however, expressed concern over the school’s low enrolment despite its capacity to accommodate many more learners. He urged the founders and school management to intensify community mobilisation so that parents in the surrounding areas enrol their children at the school instead of sending them to distant institutions. He also encouraged the school to strengthen its collaboration with the UMSC Education Department to enhance the quality of education and benefit from the department’s programmes.
The Education Secretary later visited Kabukunge Primary Teachers’ College, an institution founded by UMSC in the late 1970s. Although the college was phased out by the Ministry of Education in recent years, Sheikh Cucu inspected the premises and noted that many of the existing buildings, though old, could be renovated and repurposed to continue serving the education sector.
A foundation stone at the college commemorates the commissioning of the female dormitory in 1985 by the then Chief Kadhi of Uganda, His Eminence Sheikh Abdu Obeid Kamulegeya. The dormitory was constructed using funds mobilised by UMSC from the World Muslim League in Saudi Arabia.
While at the former college, Sheikh Cucu also visited the health unit, where he met two medical personnel, Ms. Madinah Mukasa and Ms. Nakubulwa Anita. They informed him that the facility, which now operates under Kabukunge Muslim Secondary School, no longer receives medicines and other medical supplies from the Uganda Muslim Medical Bureau (UMMB) as it did in the past.
The health workers explained that despite serving the surrounding communities, the facility has continued to operate without the support it previously received from UMMB.
In response, Sheikh Cucu pledged to relay their concerns to the Uganda Muslim Medical Bureau for appropriate action.
The inspection tour concluded at Kabukunge Muslim Secondary School, another institution founded by UMSC several decades ago. Sheikh Cucu was received by the Deputy Headteacher, Mr. Oryema Abdu Tarieq Azziz.
Mr. Oryema informed the Education Secretary that under the leadership of Headteacher Hajji Adam Matovu, the school administration has worked closely with the Ministry of Education, parents and other stakeholders, resulting in remarkable growth. He noted that the school has expanded its infrastructure, including the construction of a modern science laboratory, and now has an enrolment of more than 2,000 students.
In his remarks, Sheikh Cucu commended the school’s progress and encouraged the administration to maintain close collaboration with the UMSC Education Department to further strengthen academic standards and institutional development.
