Individuals and organisations have responded to the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council’s (UMSC) emergency relief initiative by donating foodstuffs for thousands of families affected by prolonged drought and hunger in Karamoja Sub-region. The relief initiative was launched by His Eminence Dr Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, to mobilise support for families in the northeastern sub-region facing food shortages following months of prolonged drought.
Among those who have responded to the appeal is Ugandan filmmaker and actress Ms Mariam Ndagire.
Canadian citizen and Muslim brother Muamer Dajdic, who learnt about the relief initiative from Sheikh Imran Abdunoor Ssali, the UMSC Secretary for Religious Affairs, also donated 70 packages of maize flour.
Similarly, Haj Masoud Obeid, Chairman of the Uganda Forex Bureau and Money Remittance Association, delivered a consignment of foodstuffs on behalf of the association.
The donation comprised 200 packages of maize flour, 100 packages of sugar, 100 packages of cooking oil, 100 packages of salt and 100 bags of beans.
The donations were received by His Eminence Dr Sheikh Hafiz Muhammad Bukenya on behalf of the Mufti.
Also present were Hon Hadji Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi, the UMSC Secretary General, and Hon Counsel Haj Muhammad Ali Aluma, Deputy Secretary General in charge of Administration and Finance.
Dr Sheikh Bukenya thanked the donors for demonstrating what he described as acts of human brotherhood and called upon others to emulate their example by supporting families affected by the crisis.
The UMSC says the relief initiative is intended to mobilise assistance for communities in Karamoja facing food shortages as a result of the prolonged drought.
