Government to Act on Alleged Embassy Interference

Haj Kirunda Farouk, the Deputy Presidential Press Secretary, has disclosed that President Yoweri Museveni is expected to take action regarding embassies allegedly involved in destabilising the Muslim community in Uganda. He made the remarks while delivering a message to a large congregation that gathered for the memorial prayers (Dua) of the late Hajjat Joweria Nankya in Bunyantole Village, Gombe County, Bugweri Muslim District, Busoga Region, on Sunday, April 26, 2026.

Haj Kirunda said the President is fully aware that some embassies representing certain Muslim countries in Uganda are allegedly collaborating with individuals accused of sowing discord and prolonging divisions within the Muslim community for decades. He further claimed that some of these individuals have now taken refuge within the said embassies with the intention of destabilising the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) leadership under the Mufti.

He also alleged that part of these evil plots includes attempts to frustrate Ugandan Muslims from fulfilling their religious obligation of performing the 2026 pilgrimage to the Holy City of Makkah. Haj Kirunda assured the congregation that President Museveni will soon address the matter involving the accused embassies. He further urged Muslims to avoid acts of division and internal conflict, calling instead for unity and brotherhood to foster development within the Muslim community.

He also reiterated government commitments, noting that the President will soon fulfil pledges including support for Imams and additional funding for the ongoing Muslim Women SACCO initiative.

In his address, the Mufti of Uganda, His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, supported by recitations from the Holy Quran and sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), reminded Muslims to live righteous lives and remain mindful that God rewards good deeds.

He emphasized the importance of education, urging parents to ensure their children pursue both secular and religious studies. “Knowledge enables a child to grow up as an upright citizen who is God-conscious and understands that parents are their closest friends in life,” the Mufti said. He added: “Children should always show care and affection to their parents, especially in old age, and continue to pray for them even after they pass on.”

The Mufti also welcomed proposals from the newly created Bugweri Muslim District leadership, advising them to develop a strategic plan that includes establishing an Islamic Centre in memory of the late Busoga 1st hereditary chief, Ibrahim Munulo, who embraced Islam and played a key role in its spread in Eastern Uganda.

This proposal was previously raised by Haj Yusuf Naigambi Kirunda, brother to the late Minister Haj Ali Kirunda Kivejinja, who spoke about the historical significance of Bugweri County as a cradle of Islam in Busoga. Haj Naigambi recalled that Chief Ibrahim Munulo’s conversion to Islam led to the loss of his chieftaincy under colonial rule and his subsequent exile. He called for the establishment of a memorial Islamic centre to preserve this heritage.

He also urged the UMSC to support resolutions from the District Muslim Council encouraging Muslim parents to contribute towards Islamic theological education by supporting allowances for Mullas in both Muslim-founded and government-aided schools in Bugweri.

Other speakers at the event included; Sheikh Juma Bakhit Cucu UMSC Education Secretary, H.E. Sheikh Twaha Uthuman Musa Kajaaya, Mufti’s Special Envoy to South Sudan and son-in-law of the deceased family; Haj Shaban Sadiq Nkutu, Chairman of the NRM Party; Dr. Hamidu Kimaka, LCV Chairperson of Bugweri District; Hon. Stella Maris Nankwanga, District Woman Member of Parliament-elect; Sheikh Uzaima Magumba, former Kadhi; and Sheikh Feiswal Kakaire Walya, Kadhi of Bugweri. They all shared messages of wisdom and condolences.

Lastly, the host family donated a cow to the Mufti as a symbol of appreciation for honouring their invitation.
