The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has urged Muslims to live righteous lives, observe Allah’s teachings and prepare for the hereafter, warning against wasting time on worldly pleasures.
Sheikh Mubaje made the call on Sunday, October 18, 2026, during memorial prayers for the late Haj Badru Muwonge, a prominent businessman and farmer in Mityana Municipality. Addressing mourners at the deceased’s ancestral home, the Mufti reminded Muslims that every person would be held accountable for their deeds.
“Fear the day you will be returned to Allah, then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and none will be treated unjustly,” he quoted from the Holy Quran.
He also cited the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, saying a true believer finds contentment in doing good, feels remorse after wrongdoing and is quick to repent.
Sheikh Mubaje urged Muslims to remain conscious of their purpose on earth, which he said was to worship Allah and prepare for the life to come.
“Do not waste your precious time in the amusements of this passing world, as is often portrayed on various social media platforms,” he preached.
He further called on Muslim parents to raise children with good morals and ensure they receive both secular and Islamic education.
The Mufti praised the late Muwonge for his devotion to Islam and generosity towards Muslim activities, urging his children and the wider Muslim community to emulate his legacy.
“I implore you, the children and every Muslim, to emulate his legacy,” he said.
Sheikh Mubaje also urged Muslims to support the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), saying the institution belonged to them and highlighting its progress in development and the adoption of modern management systems.
Speaking at the gathering, Mityana Muslim District Kadhi Sheikh Bashir Luwenda revealed that the late Muwonge had donated land near his home for the construction of a village mosque under the UMSC.
He also donated 25 acres of land on which a Muslim primary school was established. Plans are underway to establish a vocational training centre on the land to equip young people with practical skills.
Sheikh Luwenda said the donations had contributed to the development of Muslim services in the area.
The day’s main preacher, Sheikh Awwal Badru Miiro, the Deputy Kadhi, delivered a sermon on inheritance and the distribution of a deceased person’s property in accordance with Islamic teachings.
Sheikh Juma Mawejje Kabanda, the regional assistant to the Mufti, briefed the congregation on developments in the region, while UMSC Secretary General Hadji Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi updated them on the affairs of the council’s headquarters.
Sheikh Uthuman Twaha Musa Kaajaya, the Mufti’s special envoy to South Sudan and chairperson of the organising committee for the forthcoming Muslim Youth Convention, called on Muslims, particularly young people, to attend the event scheduled for October 29, 2026, at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
The deceased’s son, Haj Yusuf Muwonge, and his cousin, Ismail Kasozi, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner for Nakaseke, spoke on behalf of the family. They described the late Muwonge as a loving father who raised and educated his children to become responsible adults.
The prayers were attended by His Eminence Dr Sheikh Hafiz Muhammad Harunah Bukenya , 2nd Deputy Mufti, Sheikh Imran Ssali, Secretary for Religious affairs, Hon. Yaziidi Katureebe, Secretary For Administration & Human Resources, Distict Kadhis for Greater Mpigi, Mubende, religious leaders, local government officials and clan leaders, among others.
Before returning to Kampala, Sheikh Mubaje and his delegation visited Sheikh Musa Ssebumba, a prominent Muslim cleric and member of the UMSC Shura Council, who is bedridden at his home in Kiyinda-Kisiraamu, Mityana.
